Character-What is it?

Without delay, I will say that there seems to be a lowering of the standard of good character in the world today. Duh right? I am sad to say though that many Christians have the poorest character around. How is God glorified by so many that make Him look so bad? Look at these words:

Exodus 20:7
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

That is the 3rd Commandment if you were wondering. Many have mistakenly taken this to just refer to using God’s name along with curse word. I don’t think so. This refers to calling onself ‘of the Lord’ or a Christian if you will, “follower of God” and then totally not living like it. There was a time in the ages of history when a man like Abraham was known as a follower of God and people knew that he would deal fairly with them. Today if you say you are a Christian, many will become more skeptical!

So Character, what is it? What is God’s character like? We don’t have to wonder, Here it is. Moses on the mountain top asked God to show him His Glory. God shows him attributes of His Character. So we can conclude that Glory = Character.

Exodus 33:18
And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.”

Exodus 33:22
So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by.

Exodus 34:6-8 (King James Version)

6And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

7Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

8And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.

Here are the traits: merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

7Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity…

These are traits we should have if we are to have a pure Character like that of Christ. Think about it, how few have any of these characteristics, let alone all of them. Let this be our objective each day to ask for Christ to do a good work in us that He has promised to do.

Philippians 1:6 (New King James Version)

6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
